Laser trabeculoplasty is the latest in treatment options for open-angle glaucoma. This modern procedure uses a focused beam of light to treat the drainage angle of your eye. It decreases the pressure in your eye by making it easier for any fluid to flow from the front of your eye. Laser trabeculoplasty is one of the specialized ocular procedures available from Charles Oestrich MD.
Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a modification of the Argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT) process. ALT uses heat, whereas SLT uses a "cold" low-level laser beam. SLT protects the spongy tissue around the cornea of your eye against heat and clotting because it specifically targets pigmented cells and protects the surrounding area.
SLT can be repeated if necessary due to its use of a lower energy beam. It has no systemic side effects and is a safe outpatient procedure. You will be able to go home immediately after the procedure.
It may take 1-3 months for results to appear. Even after surgery, you will need to continue taking medication for treatment of glaucoma. The effects of the surgery can last from 1 to 5 years, and in some cases, even longer.
